Patients in Germany can now directly report possible side effects of drugs to authorities. The
Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and the
Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) for vaccines launched the test phase for an
Internet portal to collect such reports quicker and easier. This is to unknown side effects detected earlier than before and - if necessary - measures to minimize risk are introduced.
About
the new Internet portal uaw.pei.de consumer-patients and consumers now
have access to a (relatively) simple registration form. Suspected
cases of adverse reactions can be reported there, without requiring
additional confirmation of a physician is necessary. Who had previously namely the type of message indicating his opinion and his qualifications.
Who enters a side effect, but asked for contact information, but will not be published. The form will be transmitted via a secure connection. After sending the user also receives a confirmation that he can save or print.
Anyway
individuals should not just simply report their side effects, but this
diagnosis by a doctor and get treatment if necessary.
Risks should be identified early
Background
is a proposed change in the law in the European Union, with the purpose
of strengthening the importance of patient reporting. International
experience has shown, therefore, that the direct report of possible
drug side effects by patients can help detect risks early. This scientific staff of the authorities consider, inter alia, whether a side effect new or enhanced.
In
Germany also pharmaceutical companies, doctors and pharmacists are
required to report suspected cases of adverse drug reactions. Occur after vaccination to damages that are otherwise hard to find distinct, the local health department must be notified.
In other countries, the experience of the "self detector" methods are different. It
was investigated in studies in the UK, Canada and the U.S., as the side
effects are different reports from patients and from "health
professionals". Sufferers tend described the consequences or symptoms of nausea, dizziness and insomnia. They called less specific diagnoses. Overall, they gave significantly more symptoms on record as the health care professional.
In a study in Norway, 70 per cent of the reported side effects were not serious, in Denmark it was 55 percent.
At
least a third of the reported side effects in a Danish study were those
who had previously not appeared in the product information.
