Patients may the competent authorities in Germany now directly report possible side effects of drugs. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute (Pei) for vaccines launched on Tuesday the trial period for a new web portal to collect such reports in future quicker and easier. This is to unknown side effects detected earlier than previously and, if necessary, action is taken to reduce risk, such as the PEI announced in Langen.
No doctor needs to be confirmed

About the new Internet portal www.verbraucher-uaw.pei.de patients and consumers now have access to a simplified reporting form. Suspected cases of adverse reactions can be reported there, without requiring additional confirmation of a physician is necessary. The data of the patients are therefore confidential.

Background is a proposed change in the law in the European Union, with the purpose of strengthening the importance of patient reporting. International experience has shown, therefore, that the direct report of possible drug side effects by patients can help detect risks early. In Germany also pharmaceutical companies, doctors and pharmacists are required to report suspected cases of adverse drug reactions.
